Jules Verne's novel The Mysterious Island (French: L'Île mystérieuse) was
published in 1875. Jules Férat's illustrations appear in the original edition,
which was published by Hetzel. The novel is a crossover sequel to Jules
Verne's famous novels Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea (1870) and In
Search of the Castaways (1867-68), though the themes are vastly different. An
early draft of the novel, which was rejected by Verne's publisher and
completely rewritten before publication, was titled Shipwrecked Family:
Marooned with Uncle Robinson, a reference to the novels Robinson Crusoe and
The Swiss Family Robinson. In his later novel, Godfrey Morgan (French: L'École
des Robinsons, 1882), Verne developed a similar theme.
